The High Low Gallery will open a new exhibition by St. Louis-based transgender artist and arts educator Sarah Knight on Friday, Sept. 25.
Titled Influx, the exhibition features ceramics, works on paper and paintings exploring connections between the resilience of queer and transgender communities and the natural world. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.
Drawing inspiration from rocks, minerals and underground systems, Knight’s work examines transformation, survival and adaptation. The exhibition uses materials including clay, ash, stone and handmade ink to create layered, tactile pieces that explore how people and the natural world respond to challenging environments.
Knight, who uses they/them pronouns, grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and earned a BFA from Mills College before receiving an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis.
Their work has been exhibited regionally and nationally, with recent solo exhibitions at Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, the St. Louis Artists’ Guild and the Kansas City Artists Coalition. Knight has also completed residencies at the Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts, Jentel Foundation and Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.
Knight recently received an Artist Support Grant from the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis to develop new community-focused work.
Influx will be on view at The High Low, a Kranzberg Arts Foundation venue. The gallery is open daily during café hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no appointment required.
