A brisk, brainy WWII caper with more narrative density than emotional depth.
Operation Mincemeat plays like the fever dream of a pub crawl among history nerds. The kind of night that ends with someone pounding out a patter song about Allied disinformation campaigns while the rest harmonize over pints. The result is a clever, chaotic musical stuffed with genre-hopping numbers and rapid-fire exposition. It’s smart. It’s witty. It’s occasionally exhausting.

At its best, the show barrels forward with a manic energy that’s undeniably impressive. But the relentless plot-forward momentum comes at a cost. You rarely feel anything for the characters. They’re sketched as types, not people, and the emotional stakes remain oddly remote. What you do feel is admiration: for the sheer stamina of the performers, for the vocal agility required to land tongue-twisting lyrics, and for the commitment to style over sentiment. The notable exception is Tony winning Jak Malone’s Hester who gives us a true emotional center at various points in the play.
And yet, despite its farcical flair, the show stays surprisingly faithful to its source. The history may be highly edited, and the decisions about what to include or omit can feel strange, but it’s not fabricated. That makes Operation Mincemeat an outlier this season. This is a musical comedy about real events that respects the facts even as it riffs on them. It stands in sharp contrast to at least one other historical farce currently playing, where the facts serve the jokes rather than the other way around.
In the end, it’s a great endeavor. Not because every moment works, but because the attempt is so original and so fully committed. You may not be moved. But you will leave impressed.
