In the aftermath of yesterday’s tragic assassination, social media is teeming with people climbing onto the moral high ground—some more securely than others. To help you determine whether you’re truly standing tall or just flailing in public with your moral pants down, we’ve created this quick and easy quiz.
Answer “YES” to all the questions below, and congratulations—you might actually be the paragon of decency you think you are!
- If you were an adult when a gunman killed 26 at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012, did you publicly condemn Republicans for making fun of President Obama for crying over the slaughtered first graders? Yes? Great! You are off to a good start. (Sorry Megan McCain, you’re disqualified).
- You spoke out vigorously when right-wing media figures including Trump and Kirk mocked the hammer attack on 82-year-old Paul Pelosi. You did? You’re on a roll, and so far, you seem worthy of the high ground!
- You posted something about how the political violence has to stop yesterday, and also posted something similar when Minnesota Democratic state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were assassinated and their dog Gilbert was mortally wounded by someone with a list of Democrat targets. You did? Well, that really shows your “both sides” bona fides, and we commend you. Oh, you sat the Minnesota assasination out? Well, that’s awkward.
- You did not vote for Donald Trump because decency and civility are so important to you. Oh, you did? Sorry, you’re forever disqualified from being morally outraged about incivility or political violence. A vote for Trump was an RSVP to the chaos. It was a vote for incivility. You knew what the deal was, and you loved it.
If you answered YES to all four: Congratulations, you may proceed to post your hot takes from atop your soapbox knowing you have earned your place on the moral high ground.
If you have failed our EZ Quiz, we regret to inform you that your “high horse” act has made you look like a complete fool. So embarrassed for you. But as a parting gift for playing, you’re entitled to white grievance privilege—just be sincere about feeling it’s perfectly fine to laugh at Democrats being attacked or immigrants being fed to alligators, but completely unacceptable to feel anything but complete reverence when right wing white males are victims. It’s not a great pitch, but such sincerity earned Charlie Kirk many loyal fans.
