The spell begins the moment you decide

Picture it, a stretch of I-40 at night. I’m one of only a few cars on the road. I am driving to my hometown from Oklahoma City to feed the animals at my mother’s house. Inside the car I am coming to a decision. Do I live as myself? Or do I continue to live in a way that pleases my family, my religious community? The latter path possibly ending in scandal or burnout/suicide. I picked myself. I came out to my family, friends, and the world at large. That’s when the spell that is my life truly began.

In the world of witchcraft, we love our herbs, our candles, our moon phases, and incense. We build beautiful altars. We time things to planetary hours and write intentions in careful cursive on brown paper torn just so. But none of it—not the ritual, not the tools, not even the magic words—matters until something happens inside you.

You decide.

You stop dancing around the truth of your desire. You stop pretending you don’t care, or that you’ll try “someday,” or that it’s not that serious. And instead, you choose. You speak it. You mean it.

That’s the moment the magic kicks in.

This is the real secret behind spells: they don’t begin when the candle is lit. They begin when your will locks into place. When you say, I’m ready to want this out loud. No planetary hours, incense, or wands needed. It starts when you decide.

For queer folks, that kind of clarity is radical. Many of us were trained—consciously or not—to doubt ourselves. To stay small. To keep our longings quiet. Whether it was the closet, the classroom, the church, or even our own families, we were taught to put our needs second, to “not make a scene,” to shape-shift for safety.

So when we set an intention now—whether it’s for love, healing, protection, justice, gender euphoria, or just a damn break—it’s more than a wish. It’s reclamation.

And no, you don’t have to know how it’ll all work out. You don’t need a 12-step plan or a Pinterest-worthy altar. All you need is to do is decide that your desire matters. That your dream is worth conjuring. That you are done waiting for permission.

So if you’ve been waiting for a sign? This is it.

Name your longing. Call your future closer. Don’t apologize for wanting more. The moment you decide, the universe leans in and listens. And that’s when the magic truly begins.
