Hey, I gotta say something — and I’m saying this with love, because you’re trans too, and I get that we’re all trying to make sense of ourselves in a world that doesn’t make it easy. But when you say that nonbinary and gender non-conforming people aren’t “really” trans, that’s not just wrong — it’s harmful.
You know what it’s like to live in a world that tries to define you, box you in, and tell you you’re not valid. So why would you turn around and do that to other people who are walking the same path — even if their experience looks different from yours?
Nonbinary and GNC people are trans because they don’t identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. That’s literally what trans means. Being trans isn’t limited to binary transitions, hormones, surgeries, or “passing.” It’s about who you are versus what you were told you were supposed to be. And nonbinary folks are right there with us in that fight.
I get that sometimes, when the world is constantly invalidating us, it can feel like we have to cling to clear definitions or boundaries just to be seen. But tightening the circle so small that it shuts out nonbinary and GNC people doesn’t make you safer — it makes our entire community weaker.
Because the same systems that target you are targeting them too. The people pushing anti-trans laws, the ones denying us healthcare, the ones trying to erase us — they don’t care if someone is binary or nonbinary. They’re coming for all of us.
So why would we turn around and divide ourselves?
The trans umbrella is big enough. It always has been. And if we’re serious about trans liberation, then it has to include every single person who is fighting to exist outside of what they were assigned — binary or not.
You deserve to be seen. Nonbinary and GNC people do too.
